In 2022, the Toronto Police Service Public Safety Data Portal reported a total of 9,771 auto thefts in the city, a drastic increase from the 6,572 reported in 2021. West Humber-Clairville is the neighbourhood with the highest number of events.
According to a report by CityNews, the York Regional Police launched an auto theft prevention campaign in September 2023. Data from "Operation Auto Guard" has revealed that vehicle thefts have increased by almost 50% compared to last year.
In contrast, compared to 2019, York Region is on track to experience an increase of about 200%. According to recent reports, the top five most frequently stolen vehicles in the York Region are the Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX350, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Ram 1500, and GMC Yukon. Fort McMurray, Alberta, is rated as the city with the highest theft rate. Other cities in the top 10 include Surrey and Kelowna in BC, Winnipeg, and Saskatoon.
